Types of Aid

Grants are free financial aid dollars that you don't have to pay back. The amount you qualify for will be based on your financial need. You can receive grants from the state and federal government or from your school.

Scholarships are another form of free financial aid. Many are merit-based, which means they are awarded based on academic performance, artistic talents, or other criteria. Most require full-time enrollment each semester, continued good academic standing, and a certain grade point average.

There are several loan programs to assist with educational expenses.  The federal government offers low interest rate student and parent loans.  They also offer special benefits such as fixed interest rates, subsidized interest, and income-based repayment plans.  The Federal Direct Subsidized Loan  is an undergraduate need based loan.  The interest begins to accrue after graduation or if enrollment is dropped below half-time.  The Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan is an undergraduate or graduate non-need-based loan.  The interest begins accruing after the 1st disbursement is received.
The Federal Direct Parent/Graduate PLUS Loan is a credit-based loan. The requirements are different for each program.
Loans are also offered through private alternative loan lenders.  These are credit-based loans. The lender will set terms and conditions based on the credit score and other key factors.

Earn money while working part-time on campus or in the local community.  The work-study program is need-based.  In this federal program, you will find a part-time job in qualifying positions at your school. You can apply the money you earn toward school expenses.
